Strategic Themes

The BIG CIC is working on sharing and developing the BIG Body of Knowledge.

We have identified several Strategic Themes to work on. Strategic Themes are stakeholder groups or areas of interest within the scope of the BIG BoK. Examples include

  • Strategy Theme – To achieve business purpose, every organisation has a strategy of sorts. It may be unwritten or deeply detailed. It may be updated once every 5 years or tweaked quarterly. Whatever it is – strategy needs to be taken off the page and into the organisation (perhaps continuously). To close the control loop, those setting the strategy and related Objectives, Targets and Challenges need to understand performance and progress to enable prioritisation and re-steer when needed.
    • The BIG BoK offers a clear solution to enable this to happen end to end. There are however many studies, and our own experiences which suggest strategy delivery is less than perfect in many organisations – and worse – there is low appetite to address strategy delivery issues.
    • The Strategic Theme therefore seeks to engage the Strategy, Governance, Change and Operations Professions to communicate what BIG has to offer, listen to their needs and support organisations adopting the BIG Framework to operationalise strategy management.
  • Governance Theme. Every organisation makes decisions, and typically where matters for decision are within a controllable domain, we can make them well. However, to achieve business purpose, decision making will need to be cross domain. There needs to be effective cascade of implications down, and performance / progress up. Most organisations have infrastructure and support functions within domains – but Governance operation across domains can appear like each piece in a jigsaw set trying to align with other pieces.
    • The BIG BoK offers a clear definition of Components and Enablers to build / sustain Business Integrated Governance.
    • The Governance Theme therefore seeks to engage the Governance, Strategy, Change and Operations Professions to communicate what BIG has to offer, listen to their needs and support organisations adopting the BIG framework to operationalise Business Integrated Governance.
  • Change Theme. Change is a key aspect to Strategy Delivery. While Business as Usual functions enable the organisation to work and deliver to customers, and Value Creation groups develop our physical or service offerings – portfolio, programmes and projects (P3) can be used to  coordinate cross functional changes. Many organisations have embraced P3 management as a key capability, but fewer have built P3 management into their organisation culture, and it can remain outside of central governance operations.
    • The The BIG BoK offers a clear positioning of Change within Business Integrated Governance, and seeks to ensure the enablers for effective transformation management are in place for the Change (P3) teams.
    • The Change Theme therefore seeks to engage the Change, Governance, Strategy and Operations Professions to communicate what BIG has to offer, listen to their needs and support organisations adopting the BIG framework to build change into Business Integrated Governance.

Other Themes may be added as and when sponsors step forwards.

The mission for each Theme is to connect with Professional Groups, identify the pains they face, and present BIG Concepts, Principles and Components to enable each Professional Group to function within a Business Integrated Governance scenario.
