It sets objectives, approves investment and launches initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its operations continue serving customers, its product and asset teams make decisions about developing and sustaining value, and its programmes and projects deliver change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet, months later, leaders may struggle to explain whether the organisation is moving towards the outcomes it expected \u2013 or what should change if it is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We often call this the <strong>strategy execution gap<\/strong>. But what exactly is the gap? Or, more accurately, what are the gaps?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our proposition is that there are several, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Design and delivery gaps:<\/strong> Those developing strategic choices are insufficiently connected with those responsible for making them real.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Translation gaps:<\/strong> Strategy is not translated into coherent objectives, accountabilities, priorities, resources and expected results.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Coordination gaps:<\/strong> Operations, value creation, finance and change compete for capacity or work to incompatible assumptions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Expectation and outcome gaps:<\/strong> Actual results differ from those intended or promised.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Learning gaps:<\/strong> Information about performance, results and uncertainty does not adequately inform decisions about delivery or strategic direction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are not necessarily failures of individual professional disciplines. Other professional disciplines offer well-developed practices for managing operations, products, assets, portfolios, programmes, projects, finance, risk, assurance, information and organisational change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Approaches including strategy maps, OKRs, scorecards, Hoshin Kanri and portfolio management already address important parts of the challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Business Integrated Governance perspective is concerned with connecting these disciplines so that they operate as an effective organisational system.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are particularly interested in the interfaces between strategic choices, objectives, accountability, investment, capacity, ongoing operations, value creation, change, risk, decisions and evidence of results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The BIG Body of Knowledge provides concepts, principles, components and models that can help organisations apply and integrate this existing good practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our proposal is that strategy implementation needs to be explicitly established and operated as an organisational capability \u2013 one that can support new strategies, strategic adjustments and the continuous management of performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The pre-reading: Building the discussion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ahead of our 12 October BIG Body of Knowledge Club session, we developed a series of articles to set out the challenge, offer a BIG perspective and invite contributions from practitioners across disciplines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. The Strategy Execution Gap Is Still With Us. What Are We Missing?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An introduction to the problem, why traditional approaches can leave gaps between strategy and results, and why we need to look beyond the hand-off from strategy development to delivery. &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/big-cic.org.uk\/blog\/the-strategy-execution-gap-is-still-with-us-what-are-we-missing\/\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Article here<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Why Does Strategy Implementation Become an Issue?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Growth, mergers, underperformance, disappointing investment results, a new CEO or a strategy refresh can all expose weaknesses in an organisation&#8217;s ability to connect its strategic intentions with delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This article considers why apparently local problems can be symptoms of a wider organisational capability gap &#8211; <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/how-do-we-make-strategy-implementable-big-cic-r4dpe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Article here<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. How Do We Make a Strategy Implementable?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strategy development and implementation capability need to develop together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This article considers how purpose, current reality, vision and strategic choices connect with objectives, accountability, resources, capacity, risk and delivery contributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It introduces the importance of a connected <strong>Strategy Information Model<\/strong>, providing the information needed to make decisions and manage results. &#8211; <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/how-operate-strategy-enduring-organisational-capability-big-cic-pjbye\/?trackingId=%2Bwh7cehMQu2rDCT9gFNwRQ%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Article here<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These articles were intended to stimulate discussion and challenge, rather than present a finished solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The BIG BoK Club discussion \u2013 12 October 2026<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 12 October, we brought together practitioners from strategy, governance, portfolio management, transformation and other disciplines to examine the proposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our discussion explored whether strategy implementation should be recognised as an enduring capability of the organisation, how that capability might be established and operated, and what BIG could contribute by connecting established professional practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A number of themes emerged:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The strategy execution gap is not a single problem. Different gaps can exist in formulation, translation, coordination, delivery, evidence and learning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Having capable specialist functions does not guarantee that their work is connected around shared organisational outcomes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strategy delivery must encompass <strong>operations, ongoing value creation and change<\/strong>, not just programmes and projects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Implementation considerations need to influence strategy development, rather than only begin once a plan has been agreed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strategy needs to be continuously managed, evaluated and adapted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Executive ownership, meaningful accountability, connected information and effective Business Support are central to making the system work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conversation also reinforced the importance of considering what is already available from different professional disciplines, and how their knowledge can be applied together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read the event report from our Strategy |Implementation Discussion, 12th October:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-fe48e5de wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-black-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color has-large-font-size has-custom-font-size wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/strategy-implementation-from-execution-gap-enduring-organisational-upene\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Session Report<\/strong><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We thank everyone who participated and provided additional feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where next?
