Most have a vision for how to achieve purpose, influenced by prevailing opportunities, threats and imperatives. We set a direction, but some may keep their head in the sand &#8211; but we hope to get everyone moving in the same direction.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery \/><\/figure>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The organisation will probably have an overarching strategy, and perhaps further enabling strategies.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>It will set up organisation entities to operate and to develop value. Each kind of entity will probably have its own management methods and tools. That will generate response to the strategic asks but also innovate and generate opportunities for strategic evaluation.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Some operational units will deliver their business and their local improvement through \u201cprojects\u201d. Larger and cross functional changes may need their own entities \u2013 organised as change portfolios or programmes. Hence, across all this, our organisations set up specialist support functions to enable us to operate and manage governance \u2013 like a Project Management Office \u2013 to drive the standard and provide assistance in managing projects.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>So how do projects support strategy delivery?<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li>They may help us hit the performance targets of our project based operations (customer projects, construction projects, engineering projects etc.)<\/li>\r\n<li>We may use projects to develop products and assets for external and internal exploitation or use \u2013 but we may use \u2018Product Management\u2019 methods for that, and agile delivery, not projects at all.<\/li>\r\n<li>We may use projects to underpin the change programmes in our portfolio of cross functional change objectives<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"1\">\r\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"1\">\r\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"1\">\r\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"1\"><\/ol>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>To think about:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>Delivery entities of all forms (project, product, function, service unit..)<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>all seek resources and funds ultimately from the same pot<\/li>\r\n<li>prioritisation must be used to establish <em><strong>fair accountability<\/strong><\/em> across operations, value creation and change &#8211; but how often is this systematic and information based vs leader led value judgement?<\/li>\r\n<li>all manage issues, risks, tasks, actions and decisions &#8211; often in different ways<\/li>\r\n<li>We have dependencies across domains &#8211; how can we see \/ manage this?<\/li>\r\n<li>all manage issues, risks, tasks, actions and decisions?<\/li>\r\n<li>all need performance data (historical and forecast)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>&#8230;but this information is often siloed and unreliable, shared by a network of collate-send-interpret processes<\/p>\r\n<p><strong><strong>\u00a0<!-- \/wp:post-content --><\/strong><!-- wp:paragraph -->Scary things<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>At the APM PMO Conference last June, we found that none of the c.100 delegates would put their hand up to knowing who supported the connection of strategy to delivery. None.<\/li>\r\n<li>At the APM Governance SIG event in October \u2013 we asked 400 people to comment on their connection of strategy to delivery in terms of clarity and communication, effective cascade, prioritisation, establishment of metrics and availability of information and data \u2013 and by far the majority of answers was negative<\/li>\r\n<li>Conclusion: the connection of strategy to delivery is poor, and we don\u2019t know who is supporting the connection of the two.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><strong>Some points to challenge:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Strategic drivers will change \u2013 if your organisation needs to shift focus &#8211; how agile are you at shifting what you do?<\/li>\r\n<li>Strategy delivery is not determined fully by project delivery &#8211; Strategy is accomplished through performance and value creation which may not be achieved through projects,<\/li>\r\n<li>If we are trying to align out projects to strategic objectives \u2013 does the strategic objective owner know? If not spawned out of the strategy \u2013 how can the project be strategic (as in pertaining to a strategy)?<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1610&#8243; img_size=&#8221;Full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\r\n<p>What is the answer? Improve project delivery (of course) but think about putting in place a suitable fabric to bind strategy and delivery \u2013 all forms of it.
